The EuroAsia Interconnector is a visionary high-voltage direct current (HVDC) interconnector project that aims to integrate the national electricity grids of Cyprus, Israel, and Greece. The project will establish a subsea direct current (DC) cable, with high-voltage direct current (HVDC) onshore converter stations at each connection point, and a total capacity of 2,000MW.
The EuroAsia Interconnector is a pioneering European Project of Common Interest (PCI) recognized as an EU “electricity highway,” strategically linking the national electricity grids of Cyprus, Greece, and Europe. This groundbreaking initiative is anticipated to terminate the energy isolation of Cyprus, fortify its energy system by integrating it with the European networks through mainland Greece, and significantly enhance the security of energy supply for all countries. The EuroAsia Interconnector is poised to enable the participating countries to diversify their energy sources by integrating them into the European network and providing a conduit for electricity generated from renewable energy sources.
The project has received substantial financial support, including a €657 million grant from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and a €100 million grant from the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Fund. The EuroAsia Interconnector is a monumental infrastructure endeavor that is set to revolutionize the energy landscape by establishing a reliable alternative route for the transfer of electric energy to and from Europe. This visionary project, which has transitioned to the implementation phase under the leadership of ADMIE Greece, is expected to yield far-reaching benefits, including the promotion of renewable energy sources, the reinforcement of energy security, and the generation of significant economic and geopolitical advantages for the region.
